GPU SWAP & SMOOTHNESS CHEATSHEET

INTEL ARC · ALCHEMIST & BATTLEMAGE
2026 EDITION
01 PRE-SWAP CHECKLIST
Before You Remove the Old GPU
Download the latest Intel Arc driverGet it from intel.com/download-center — WHQL version recommended. Save the .exe to a known location.
Download DDUDisplay Driver Uninstaller from guru3d.com — essential for clean driver swap between vendors.
Note current display settingsResolution, refresh rate, HDR config, VRR state. These may reset after swap.
Disable Resizable BAR check (if needed)Arc GPUs require ReBAR for best performance. Verify it's enabled in BIOS — most modern boards have it on by default.
Critical: ReBAR Requirement

Intel Arc GPUs lose significant performance without Resizable BAR (up to 10-15% in some titles). Unlike NVIDIA/AMD where it's optional, ReBAR is strongly recommended for Arc.

  • BIOS → Advanced → PCI Subsystem → Above 4G Decoding: Enabled
  • BIOS → Advanced → PCI Subsystem → Resizable BAR: Enabled
  • Verify with GPU-Z: Bus Interface → Resizable BAR should say Enabled

WARN AMD Ryzen + Intel Arc: ensure CSM is disabled in BIOS for ReBAR to work.

02 CLEAN DRIVER INSTALL
DDU → Intel Driver Procedure
Boot into Safe ModeWin+R → msconfig → Boot → Safe boot ✓ → Restart. Or: Shift + Restart → Troubleshoot → Startup Settings → 4.
Run DDUSelect GPU vendor of OLD card (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel). Click 'Clean and restart'. If switching vendors, run DDU twice — once for old vendor, once for Intel.
Shut down, swap GPUPower off completely. Remove old GPU, install Intel Arc card. Connect power cables (8-pin for A770/B580).
Boot and install Intel driverWindows will use basic display. Run the Intel driver .exe downloaded earlier. Allow firmware updates when prompted — Arc updates FW components with driver installs.
Restart 2-3 timesIntel Arc may need multiple restarts for firmware + driver to fully initialize. Intel Graphics Software may show incomplete info on first boot — normal behavior.

INFO Intel driver installs include multiple firmware components (FW, OPROM, FWData, Config) — this is normal and different from NVIDIA/AMD which use a single BIOS.

03 POST-INSTALL TUNING
Intel Graphics Software Settings
  • SET Display → Refresh Rate: Max (e.g. 144Hz)
  • SET Display → Variable Refresh Rate: Enabled
  • SET Graphics → Low Latency Mode: Enabled
  • TIP Graphics → FPS Limiter: set 3-5 below monitor max if using VRR
  • CHECK System Info → Resizable BAR: Enabled
Windows Settings
  • SET Game Mode: On
  • SET Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling: On
  • TIP Power Plan: High Performance or Ultimate Performance
  • WARN Disable 'Fullscreen Optimizations' on old DX9/DX11 games that stutter
Shader Cache Warmup

Intel Arc shader compilation can cause stutter on first launch of games. The Precompiled Shader Distribution system helps, but you should still:

  • Let games fully compile shaders on first launch (progress bars in menus)
  • Run a quick benchmark pass in-game before judging performance
  • DX12/Vulkan titles handle this much better than DX11 on Arc

INFO DX11 performance has improved dramatically since Alchemist launch (~19% avg FPS gain over early drivers) but DX12 remains the sweet spot for Arc.

04 XeSS & FRAME GENERATION TUNING
XeSS Super Resolution Modes
ModeScaleBest For
Ultra Quality1.3xMinimal upscaling, max clarity
Quality1.5xRecommended default — best balance
Balanced1.7xGood for GPU-limited scenarios
Performance2.0xMax FPS boost with some quality loss
Ultra Performance3.0xExtreme boost, noticeable artifacts
XeSS Frame Generation / MFG
ModeRatioNotes
XeSS-FG (XeSS 2)1:11 generated frame per rendered. Low latency impact.
MFG 2x (XeSS 3)2:12 generated per rendered. Good balance.
MFG 3x (XeSS 3)3:13 generated per rendered. Higher latency.
MFG 4x (XeSS 3)4:1Max smoothness. Only for slow-paced games.

WARN XeSS-FG requires XeLL (Xe Low Latency) enabled. MFG only works in DX12 titles on Windows. Game restart required to change MFG mode.

Driver Override for MFG

You can force MFG on any XeSS 2 game even if the game doesn't natively support it:

  • Open Intel Graphics Software → Graphics tab
  • Find Multi-Frame Generation override section
  • Select 2x / 3x / 4x mode
  • Launch game → restart required for changes

TIP Available on ALL Arc GPUs — Alchemist, Battlemage, and even iGPUs with XMX units (Meteor Lake, Lunar Lake, Arrow Lake, Panther Lake).

05 SMOOTHNESS & FRAME PACING
Frame Pacing Optimization
  • VRR Enable FreeSync/Adaptive Sync in display settings — Arc supports both
  • CAP Set FPS limiter in Intel Graphics Software 3-5 fps below refresh rate
  • API Prefer DX12/Vulkan over DX11 — Arc's DX12 path is significantly better optimized
  • STUTTER First-run shader stutter is expected — goes away after initial compilation
Monitoring Smoothness

Use Intel PresentMon or CapFrameX to check smoothness:

  • Frametime — total time per frame (lower = better)
  • GPU Busy — time GPU actively renders (Intel-exclusive metric)
  • Frametime ≈ GPU Busy → GPU-limited (ideal)
  • Frametime >> GPU Busy → CPU-bottlenecked

TIP PresentMon's GPU Busy metric is the best way to determine if you're CPU or GPU limited — far more precise than simple GPU utilization %.

Known Arc-Specific Issues
IssueWorkaround
DX9 games stutter/crashUse DXVK (DX9→Vulkan wrapper)
Shader stutter on first runWait for Precompiled Shaders, run benchmark first
Missing game in Intel GS profilesAdd .exe manually → set per-game settings
Afterburner OSD not showingUse PresentMon overlay instead, or update RTSS
No memory OC optionIntel Graphics Software now supports VRAM OC on Battlemage
06 QUICK OC GUIDE
Arc Overclocking Basics
Start with +50 MHz GPU offsetIntel Graphics Software → Performance → GPU Clock Offset. Test stability with 3DMark Time Spy.
Increase in +25 MHz stepsRun benchmark after each step. Watch for artifacts, crashes, or driver timeouts (TDR).
Adjust voltage if neededMax safe software voltage ~1.18-1.2V on Alchemist. Beyond requires hardware mod (EVC2). Battlemage may differ.
VRAM OC (Battlemage)B580: stock 19 Gbps, OC possible up to ~22 Gbps via Intel Graphics Software. Memory OC not available on Alchemist.
Power limit: raise to max availableIntel Graphics Software allows PL increase. For higher limits on Acer BiFrost cards, use BiFrost software profiles.

WARN Reset to defaults via Intel Graphics Software if unstable. Arc OC Tool's only reset method is through Arc Control/Graphics Software.

07 ARC STRENGTHS & CONSIDERATIONS
Arc Advantages
  • MFG XeSS 3 MFG available on ALL Arc GPUs — even old Alchemist and iGPUs
  • AV1 Best-in-class AV1 hardware encode via Xe Media Engine
  • PRICE Aggressive pricing — B580 at $249 competitive with RTX 4060
